US team still probing Ghana’s market fires in America

The forensic team from the United States that helped Ghana to investigate a spate of market fires is continuing the investigations in America, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service has told Radio XYZ.

The team was in Ghana at the behest of the country’s government to assist with investigations more than half a dozen market fires which occurred within a few weeks.

Some government officials put the fires down to arson.

Some opposition parties challenged the government to prove its suspicions of arson.

The forensic investigations were expected to unravel the mystery behind the fires, which ravaged the businesses of thousands of traders in the national capital, Accra and the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

Former Ahafo Ano South Member of Parliament of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Balado Manu, has persistently expressed skepticism about the existence of any report on the forensic investigations.

However, Billy Anaglatey told XYZ Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu on Wednesday that the Americans are still investigating the Ghanaian market fires in the US.

He said: “certain samples and evidences were gathered; certain information were gathered...what they said was [that] they were going to subject those things to forensic investigations to determine what exactly might have caused this fires”.

Pressed by the Host as to whether that implied that investigations were continuing in the US by the team, Billy Anaglatey answered in the affirmative.
