US Commends Ghana's role in Liberia

Accra, Oct. 12, GNA - The United States Under Secretary of State for African Affairs has commended Ghana's role in bringing about a peaceful change in Liberia, saying little would have been achieved without the presence of her peacekeeping forces.

Ms. Jendayi Frazier, who said she was excited to be in Ghana said she was looking forward to working with Ghana to consolidate democratic change and peace on the continent. Ms. Frazier made the comments on Wednesday when she called on Nana Akufo Addo in Accra.

She arrived from Liberia where she witnessed the first post-war election that is seeking to elect a President and 30 senators for Liberia's general assembly. Ms Frazier is in Ghana to initiate mutual discussions with Ghanaian foreign office officials on Ghana-US relations.

Former football star George Weah and Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, an economist, are the frontrunners in the polls, which ended on Tuesday. Ms. Frazier said the US administration was working at developing meaningful ties with Africa and would work to make it happen. Nana Akufo-Addo said Ghana was also keen on developing stronger bilateral relations with the United States and to continue various initiatives to bring peace in Africa, notably Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo
