UNESCO Pledges 20,000 Euro for more computers

Accra, Jan. 9, GNA- Mr Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on Friday pledged 20,000 Euros to purchase computers for basic schools especially those in the rural areas.

He said education was not only learning how to read and write but was also about learning how to use the computer in this era of information technology.

Mr Matsuura said this when he visited an on going workshop for Assisted Schools Project network (ASPnet), initiated by UNESCO in Accra. About 140 pupils from all the 110 districts are being introduced to computer for the first time.

The UNESCO Director-General who was very happy about the computer programme for the pupils said it was good for the children to be exposed to information technology at the early stages and asked the Ghana Education Service (GES) to submit a proposal on computer programme worth 20,000 Euros.

Reverend Ama Afo Blay, Director-General of GES who conducted the Director-General round the Ministry's science resource centres, which are supported by UNESCO, commended the organisation's continued support for Ghana's educational programmes.

She said it was very crucial to see the plight of the rural children as they need opportunities the urban children have access to. Rev. Blay appealed to UNESCO to assist Accra Girls School with a language laboratory and other deprived schools in the rural areas.
