Casual staff at the Northern Regional Hospital, also known as Tamale Central Hospital, have begun a sit-down strike over five months of unpaid salaries, disrupting hospital operations.

The workers, mainly orderlies who provide essential services, say the lack of pay has left them with no choice but to take action.

Speaking on Channel One News on March 23, 2026, Adam Sulemana Baba, Secretary of the Orderlies, the strike is as a result of the unaddressed issue of unpaid wages

“We have been working for almost 15 years as casual workers. However, for the past five months, we haven’t been paid. We have tried to bring our situation to the attention of management, even during Ramadan, but nothing has changed,” he said.

The strike has affected various departments of the hospital.

Wards and washrooms, normally maintained by the orderlies, have fallen into poor condition, raising concerns among both patients and healthcare workers.

Healthcare professionals have expressed frustration at the situation, noting that the absence of casual staff is compromising cleanliness and the quality of service.

“Without the casual staff, the hospital’s cleanliness is severely affected, and it’s compromising the quality of service we can offer to patients,” said a nurse at the facility.

Sanitation at the hospital, already under pressure due to limited resources, has worsened significantly, raising alarms about the risk of disease transmission, particularly during busy periods or when infection control is critical.
