UN Youth Ghana Celebrates International Youth Day

The United Nations Youth Ghana marked this year’s edition of the International Youth Day with a forum at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

The town hall meeting which was on the theme “Transforming Education” had in attendance representatives from the Ghana Education Service, GIMPA and UN Youth Ghana.

Speaking at the event, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of the Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education (STMIE) Betty Boah opined that government’s intended transformation of the education sector will not yield the needed result if student do not indicate their willingness to embrace new things.

She stressed on the importance of an all-inclusive education policy which she contends will be key in unlocking the potentials of students and also equip them with the skillset to thrive in any part of the world.

“We now say that education is not just within our country, its inter-continental so we need to prepare our students in a way that they will be able to be functional when they go outside Ghana”.

“When it comes to transforming education, the individual must be ready to be transformed. The curriculum planners will plan the whole thing and include everything that will make the person succeed but if the individual is not ready for change, it will not happen”, she said.

A Science and Maths Coordinator of the Weija Directorate of the Ghana Educational Service, Saddik Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the event and encouraged teachers to “contextualize” their teachings.

“The town hall meeting was great. We from the education side would want this continue and we want you to extend this to our supervisors, directors, our head teachers and teachers. Now we want to move away teaching in a straight forward way without contextualizing whatever you are teaching. What we are saying is can students contextualize whatever they are taught”.

Daniel Kwesi Afari, acting-country head of the UN Youth Ghana said “We want to champion the course of the youth that they will be part of policy and wouldn’t be left of any decision making in this country. They are the future and we believe in them that if peace is going to reign in this country then we should add them to the things we do in this country”.
