UN Statistical Commission honours Daasebre Oti Boateng

The United Nations Statistical Commission has honoured the Paramount Chief of New Juaben Traditional Area and eminent scholar, Daasebre Prof (Emeritus) Oti Boateng, for his shared-pioneering achievement as the 1st African, making Ghana the first African Country, to Chair the prestigious global commission as its 24th Chair in 1987.

The historic recognition was part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the UN Statistical Commission. The UN Statistical Commission is the highest decision making body for international statistical activities, and is celebrating 70 years of global statistical cooperation and the promotion of internationally comparable statistical systems.
In a commemorative brochure released on 7 March 2017 to mark the occasion, DaasebreOtiBoateng was honoured with 32 other eminent Chairpersons from across the world for their sterling contributions to the brand and the eminent status of the Commission during the past seven decades.
Among the distinguished personalities Daasebre shared honours with are: Stuart A. Rice of the United States, Herbert Marshall of Canada, Philip Idenberg of the Netherlands, Harry Campion and Sir Claus Moser of the United Kingdom, P. C. Mahalanobis and V. R. Rao of India, JozefOlenski of Poland and Vera Nyitrai of Hungary, the first woman to chair the Commission.

The released described Daasebre as an eminent traditional ruler and a renowned Scholar who pioneered the idea of the World Statistics Day during his tenure,and oversee its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the 1st World Statistics Day on the 20 October 2010. The World Statistics Day is now observed every 5-year on 20 October.

Daasebre’s legendary personality and exploits were extolled in the released brochure citing him as the longest serving government statistician of Ghana for a record term of 18-years, and also being the 1st African Chairperson of the International Conference of Labour Statisticians at its 15th Session in Geneva, Switzerland in January, 1993.

Daasebre Oti Boateng has held many distinguished positions and has received numerous national and international recognitions for his exploits as a global eminent citizen. He has also been a member of the United Nations International Civil Service Commission since 2003.
Daasebre,who observed his 79th Birthday on March 11 this year, is currently in the United States to attend the 84th session of the International Civil Service Commission in New York.
