UN Secretary-General lauds appointment of Adeniji

Accra, July 17, GNA - Busumuru Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General, on Thursday lauded the appointment of Mr Oluyemi Adeniji, a former diplomat of the World body as the Foreign Minister of Nigeria. This was contained in a statement the United Nation Information Centre issued in Accra.

Until his appointment, Mr Adeniji was a Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sierra Leone.

Busumuru Annan wished him well in his new portfolio and also congratulated him for the effective leadership he provided to the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

The statement said it was under Mr Adeniji's stewardship, when UNAMSIL supported massive disarmament exercise, as well as national elections in Sierra Leone and facilitated the restoration of the authority of the government.

It noted that UNAMSIL would continue to assist the people of Sierra Leone to consolidate peace in the country.

The statement added that pending the appointment of Mr Adeniji's successor, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Aan Doss would serve as Officer-in-Charge of UNAMSIL.
