UK Envoy Urges Ghanaweb To Verify Stories

Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana's High Commissioner to the UK has urged operators of Ghana Home Page (Ghanaweb.com), an internet based media agency which provides a broad spectrum of information on Ghana, to institute mechanisms to verify stories before putting them on the site.

He also advised the operators to desist from featuring negative stories which could invariably send wrong signals about developments in Ghana.

Mr. Osei made the comments during discussions with Mr. Francis Akoto, the founder of Ghana Home Page (Ghanaweb.com) and CEO of Ghanaweb International while on a short visit to London. Present at the meeting were Mr. Fritz Andoh, Minister/Counsellor of Information and Mr. Charles Wereko, Counsellor/Information of the Ghana High Commission.

He described Ghanaweb as one of the best on the scene and praised it for serving as a vehicle for the dissemination of information on a wide range of subjects on the country.

Mr. Osei continued that to maintain its leading position, Ghanaweb has to be seen as presenting fair and balanced reports on the Ghanaian political scene and not be seen as favouring a particular political party in the prominence given to some stories.

Responding to the comments, Mr. Akoto said the website would continue to play a vanguard role in the dissemination of information to ensure free and fair presentation of stories on Ghana.

He added that the web site would continue to contribute its quota to the development of the country and assured the High Commissioner of his commitment towards enhancing the good image of the country through the operations of his website.

He thanked His Excellency for his commendation about the operations of the website and added that it would continue to shoulder its responsibility by providing service to all segments of the Ghanaian society both at home and abroad.

Mr. Akoto however advised government institutions in Ghana to take advantage of the facility by regularly providing direct inputs for use on the site.
