UG to establish regional campuses in 2 years

The University of Ghana (UG) has begun consultations towards establishing full campuses across the 10 regions in the country.

This is aimed at preventing individuals from travelling all the way to Accra in order to pursue higher education and also increase the number of intake from second cycle institutions.

If successful, the move will help cater for the possible huge applicants in the next two years due to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy which has resulted in an increase in SHS enrolment.

Speaking in an interview with Class FM’s Gemma Appiah on Tuesday 12 June 2018, UG Registrar Mrs Mercy Haizel-Ashia said the university has reached its limits in the number of students intake so they are exploring other options.

“We have Distance Education but we want to quadruple the number…There are regional offices so we are going to establish all of them as City Campuses…So when we do that people will say they are going to the University of Ghana Campus then they will stay in the regions then they will do the work there and get the degrees as everybody else…We are still discussing it to make sure in two years’ time we will be ready,” she said.
