The Concerned Students’ Movement of the University of Ghana has announced plans to protest on Monday, 2 November, over a 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).
The group is demanding a reduction in the revised charges, refunds for students who have already paid the increased fees and greater transparency in decisions affecting accommodation costs.
Speaking to Citi News, a member of the movement, Ishmael Oduro-Acheampong, said the group was engaging the Dean of Students’ Affairs and other university authorities to resolve its concerns ahead of the planned demonstration.
He described the new accommodation charges as excessive, arguing that the cost of some facilities had risen sharply within two semesters.
“Just two semesters ago, the facility where students were paying about GH₵3,000 and GH₵4,000 now is being priced around GH₵8,000,” he said.
Oduro-Acheampong also questioned the process through which the increases were determined, insisting that students should be consulted and provided with clear explanations before new charges are introduced.
He argued that accommodation fees should reflect the quality of services provided, warning against charging students premium rates for facilities that do not offer comparable standards.
The movement is also demanding greater accountability from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), particularly in its handling of issues affecting students.
Oduro-Acheampong said the group expected university authorities to justify the increases and demonstrate how the revised fees corresponded with the services available to residents.
The planned protest is scheduled for November 2 as the movement presses for a review of the charges and greater student involvement in decisions concerning accommodation costs.
