UCC students to demonstrate over campus attacks

The students of University of Cape Coast (UCC) will on Saturday embark on a peaceful march to bring to the fore, what they termed consistent attacks on them by residents in communities around the campus.

According to the Students Representative Council of UCC, the students are not safe as they on daily basis experience attacks and armed robbery.

“The normal thievery has graduated to robbery and attack. Almost every day [the SRC] receives reports of attack on students,” a statement signed and issued by the SRC President, Tony Henry Arthur said.

It claimed a final year optometry student of the University “was butchered” last week, something it described as “an eyesore”.

The SRC observed that though the University’s security was doing it best, their impact have not been the best considering the cases of attacks, thievery and robbery recorded on the campus. “The communities around the university are feeding on the students but in a very negative direction,” it said It said the level of insecurity on campus, especially at night has triggered the demonstration which it said would send a warning signal to those engaged in the attacks, stating “A shake by the students will send the signal that the daily machete and gun attacks on the students have gotten to the apex and they must take caution”.

The SRC explained the planned demonstration is not targeted at the school authorities but “a general demonstration to the communities [of] the perpetuators, the assembly, the police, the interior ministry…to show how serious we are to seek solution and end this”.
