UCC basic schools get gymnasiums

Cape Coast, Jan. 12 GNA - Madam Kathryn Robinson, United States Ambassador in Ghana, on Monday commissioned recreational facilities, "jungle gymnasiums" for the University of Cape Coast (UCC) nursery, primary and junior secondary schools at Cape Coast.

The US government provided ten million cedis for each of the gymnasiums, designed and built by Professor Hal Werner, Teacher of the International Foundation for Education and Self-help (IFESH) attached to the University.

Madam Robinson unveiled a plague to mark the occasion and called for stronger co-operation between the US and Ghana to foster unity and development. She said the US government has through its agencies carried out a number of projects, adding that her outfit is very much interested in the development of educational facilities.

The Ambassador also mentioned the activities of Peace Corps Volunteers from her country in Ghana and said the about 150 of them currently in the country are mostly involved in teaching. She asked the pupils to make good use of the gymnasiums, which she said would help promote good health.

Professor S. K. Adjepong, Vice Chancellor of UCC, said the US has assisted the university to establish a primary education department and provided grants for the purchase of teaching and learning aids for its basic schools. Professor Adjepong also took the opportunity to thank the Managing Director of CP (Construction Pioneers) for tarring the roads at the East and West gates leading to the University. GNA
