UCC Alumnus donates books to alma mater

Dr. Billy Annan, a Ghanaian biologist based in the United States of America, and an alumnus of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has donated mathematics and biology textbooks worth 150 million cedis to the university's Faculty of Science.

Dr. Peter Kwapong of the Zoology Department who presented the books on behalf of the donor at the UCC on Monday said the gesture was Dr. Annan's "widow's mite" towards enhancing teaching and learning of science in the university.

It was also in response to an appeal made by lecturers of the faculty when Dr. Annan visited the university last year.

Professor Samuel Adjepong, Vice-chancellor, who received the books, said this was the first time the UCC had received a consignment of books from an alumnus, and commended Dr. Annan for his effort.

He appealed to other alumni to emulate him, stressing that "without Books, we cannot do any effective teaching and learning in the university".

Prof. Adjepong charged the Dean of the Faculty of Science to ensure that the books are made available to the students and not taken away from the shelves.

Professor Kobina Yankson, Dean of the Faculty, thanked the donor for his assistance and said the books would go a long way to reduce the stress on the faculty.

He, however, appealed to philanthropists and organisations to provide the university with more physics and chemistry books as well as equipment and a means of transportation to enhance academic work.
