Two teenage boys drown in Tarkwa

Esaaman Kakraba(W/R), Aug. 20, GNA - Two school children who went swimming unaccompanied in River Rapaloma drowned on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, Joseph Aidoo, 14, and Eric Kweku Asamoah, 13, were all class six pupils of the Anglican Primary and Akoon Primary Schools in Tarkwa respectively.

The deceased were among three others who at around 1500 hours left their homes at Borborbor near Tarkwa for a swim and soon on diving into the river, the two disappeared in the water but their three other colleagues managed to swim to safety and called for help.

Some individuals who lived nearby quickly dashed into the river in an attempt to rescue the two boys but all efforts proved futile.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Police Superintendent Ephraim B. Kwarteng of the Tarkwa District Police Command, said at around 1700 hours some elders and chiefs of Borborbor and Essaman Kakraba reported the incident to the Police.

He said more divers were mobilised from Huniso and at 1830, the first body was retrieved but due to poor visibility, the rescue team abandoned the search and started again at about 0600 hours on Thursday.

Superintendent Kwarteng said at 0815 hours, the second body was removed from the river.

The corpses have been deposited at the Tarkwa Government Hospital Morgue for autopsy and the children are likely to be buried on Friday after a corona's report and autopsy are completed.
