Two region unite to deal with natural disasters

Goaso (B/A), Dec 19, GNA - Six administrative districts from the Brong-Ahafo and the Ashanti Regions have come together to collectively deal with disaster especially the menace of bushfires.

Therefore, an inter-district management taskforce comprising representatives of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO); Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS); National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE); Forestry Services Division (FSD) and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) from the districts have ended a day's meeting at Goaso in the Asunafo District.

The Districts are Asunafo, Asutifi, Dormaa and Tano all in Brong-Ahafo and Ahafo-Ano North and Ahafo-Ano South both in the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the meeting, the Brong-Ahafo Regional NADMO Coordinator, Nana Atta Afena said the Minister of the Interior had revealed that his outfit would soon come out with a special fund for disaster management to stamp out the perennial problem of lack of funds.

He urged the taskforce to encourage the registration of anti-bushfire volunteer squads with the department of co-operatives to enable them to gain access to credit facilities.

Nana Afena also suggested that the squads be given training in income generating activities such as beekeeping, mushroom and grass-cutter raising to make them self-sufficient and less reliant on people who employ their services while burning the trash on their farms. The Asunafo District MOFA Director, Dr Oppong Yeboah said it was necessary for the taskforce to package its educational messages to suit the demands of their target groups.
