Two people survive in Bawku shooting incident

Bolgatanga, Dec. 9, GNA - A 22-year old barber and his girlfriend are responding to treatment at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, after they had been shot by two unidentified men at the new lorry park in Bawku town Monday night.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Blewushie Cashman, Bawku Municipal Police Commander told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku that while the barber, Osman Saeed, and his girlfriend Nimatu Mumuni sat in the barbering shop around 20.45 hours, two men on a motorcycle pulled up in front of the shop. One of the motorists fired at the two victims with a hunting rifle, after which the motorcycle sped off into the night. Military men on patrol duties who got to the scene rushed the victims to the hospital where they are receiving treatment. "I don't think the incident has any link with the ethnic problem between Mamprusis and Kusasis in Bawku," said the Municipal Police Commander, adding that it was probably a personal "boyfriend-girlfriend matter."

He said the security agencies were investigating the incident, and asked residents of the area who happened to have been on the scene at the time of the shooting, to assist the police with information that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. The curfew in Bawku remains from 12.00 hours midnight to 04.00 hours.
