The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) have declared an indefinite strike over what they describe as unfair treatment and neglect by the government, while the Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted Teachers have hit the streets to demand payment of over 13 months of salary arrears.
TEWU declared an indefinite nationwide strike on Friday, September 19, 2025, accusing the government of ignoring the plight of non-teaching staff in the country’s education sector.

In a statement dated September 19, 2025, and signed by General Secretary, King James Azortibah, TEWU directed all its members including staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), public and technical universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board to stay home until further notice.
“This decision has become inevitable due to the Government and employer institutions’ persistent failure to address long-standing concerns… despite exhausting all laid-down legal and procedural requirements,” the union said.

The demands include the immediate signing of Conditions of Service, inclusion of non-teaching GES staff in the September Continuous Professional Development Allowance, resolution of promotion-related grievances, and urgent action by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to finalise outstanding agreements.
The Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted Teachers has also taken to the streets in protest over months of unpaid salaries.
The protest began in the early hours of Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
According to the group, the demonstration seeks to compel the authorities to settle the arrears and issue the long-awaited staff ID cards required to process their salaries.
Leaders of the group have described their continued unpaid service as unjust and demoralising, vowing to sustain the protest until their grievances are addressed.
