Two convicted on drug charges

Two persons were on Tuesday sentenced by an Accra Circuit court for possession and use of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Emmanuel Agyapong, unemployed, who was charged for possession of narcotic drugs, was sentenced to three years imprisonment, while Augustine Bukari, also unemployed was charged for use of narcotic drugs and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

The two were both also fined 100 penalty units each by the court. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced accordingly.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ernest Acheampong told the court that the complainants are policemen stationed at Amasaman, whilst the convicts are both unemployed and live at Pokuase.

He said, while on night patrol duty, on November 11, the complainants received information that, some people were dealing in narcotic drugs at Pokuase Sawmill area.

The prosecution said at about 02:00 hours, the complainants proceeded to the spot and arrested Emmanuel who was selling the drugs to his customers. Augustine who had also gone to the spot to buy the drug for use was also arrested.

He told the court that when the two were searched, 71 wrappers of whitish substances suspected to be cocaine were found on Emmanuel, and two similar ones on Augustine.

DSP Acheampong said an amount of GH? 47.00 was also retrieved from Emmanuel. The two convicts both admitted possession and use of the drugs in their caution statements.
