Two Students In Car Theft, Murder Escapade

Cape Coast A 17-year-old Liberian student has been placed in custody for his alleged involvement in a car stealing case at the weekend. The suspect, together with another student, allegedly hired a taxi from Bakaano, a suburb of Cape Coast, to Holy Child School on the night of Sunday, May 11, this year. ASP Kweku Siaw, Deputy Regional Police Commander, told newsmen that the driver of the cab with registration number CR 61 N, Mr. Kweku Abrakwah, was asked to stop for the suspect to urinate, which the driver obliged. The other student, who was sitting at the back, forced a rope around the neck of the driver and pulled him out of the cab. The suspect joined him and together, they gave the driver a sound beating until he became unconscious. They then drove the cab away. ASP Siaw said the driver later regained consciousness and after managing to remove the rope from his neck, went to a friend staying nearby. His friend after listening to Mr. Abrakwah's story, accompanied him to the police station to lodge a complaint. ASP Siaw said a police barrier spotted the cab approaching and signalled it to stop, but the students sped past them. This compelled the police to shoot one of the cab's tyre. But the students managed to drive on till they came to Wankam, a village near Anomabo, where the car was abandoned. The police commander said the Liberian walked to Egyaa Number One late in the night where he was arrested by the people on suspicion that he was a thief. During interrogation, however, he said he was travelling to Accra but their bus had broken down. The people, however, asked him to take them to where the bus was which he complied but they arrived at the point where the taxicab was abandoned to meet the police for Mr. Abrokwah to identify the Liberian. Mr. Siaw did not, however, say what had happened to the other student allegedly involved in the stealing of the car. The suspect is helping the police in their investigations.
