Two Cable thieves jailed 20 years

Cape Coast, Feb. 8, GNA - A circuit court at Cape Coast on Friday sentenced two metal scrap dealers to 10 years imprisonment each for stealing cables belonging to Ghana Telecom. Patrick Kwabena Baba Yaro and Ekow Gyedu pleaded not guilty. In the dock with them was Seidu Musah, who was acquitted and discharged due to lack of evidence.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court that in 2005 Yaro and Gyedu were apprehended by security men of Ghana Telecom at Elmina when they were seen carrying big sacks. He said when the sacks were searched, large quantities of telephone cables which had been burnt were found.

The convicts mentioned Musah as an accomplice and that the two men had stolen the cables from Ghana Telecom and burnt them in a nearby bush, deposited one sack of the burnt cables with Musah but were arrested when they went to him to pick the sack.
