Traders Want Sheds Back

Traders of the burnt Makola market annex two, popularly known as Tema Station, on Friday appealed to the Accra

Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to ensure that market sheds are returned to the victims after their re-construction.

They expressed the fear that, reconstructed market sheds, are normally allocated to different traders because they were not able to afford rent slapped on them.

"We are begging that, the sheds should be given back to us so we can continue to sell and fend for our families," they said.

The traders made the appeal when the Association of Queen-mothers of the Accra Metropolis visited them to express their sympathy to them.

Madam Rosemary Laryea, Market Organiser, who spoke on behalf of the traders, urged the AMA to rescind its decision to put up a two-storey building to accommodate them.

She also urged the AMA and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to expedite action on construction of temporary structures as promised to alleviate the suffering of the traders.

The Vice Chairman of the Market, Mr Kojo Baiden thanked the government for its assistance so far and asked that they should be involved in all decisions that would affect them.

Naa Ayeley I, Abeka Maanye and the Vice President of the Association, cautioned the traders to be more careful with electrical appliances, which could easily catch fire when mishandled. She called on the Public Works Division (PWD) to pull down a weak burnt building near the site to avert any disaster.

During the visit, the GNA observed that, work on raising new shed was in progress and the traders were expecting relief items from NADMO.
