Trader in Court over 'wee' and catridges

Kweku Gyamfi, a trader, who allegedly recruited two persons in Accra to accompany him to Obuasi to rob his uncle who deals in gold on Tuesday appeared before Accra Circuit Court.

Gyamfi charged with possessing narcotic drugs and firearms without lawful authority pleaded not guilty. He has been remanded into Police custody to reappear on October 27.

Gyamfi claimed the 11 wraps of dried leaves and two live cartridges were to be used for ritual purposes.

The accused told his alleged accomplices that he had two guns and would give them two cartridges when they reached Obuasi.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector E. Afful told the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh that the complainants were Emmanuel Adu Poku and Voice Suhbawiera both traders residing at Agbogbloshie.

On October 5, at about 7:00 am, Gyamfi approached the complainants and informed them that his uncle is a gold dealer at Obuasi and he (Gyamfi) was looking for some people to accompany him to rob his uncle.

Prosecution said the complainants feigned interest but expressed their readiness to join him and asked Gyamfi how they were going to embark on the robbery operation.

Chief Inspector Afful said Gyamfi told the complainants that he has two guns at Obuasi and some ammunition in his travelling bag.

According to the prosecutor, the complainants wanted to ascertain from Gyamfi if what he had told them was true or not so they asked him (Gyamfi) to bring the ammunition for them to see before embarking on the trip.

Prosecution said a few minutes later Gyamfi returned with the bag containing the ammunitions and he was nabbed.

The prosecutor said Gyamfi in an attempt to escape threw away the bag but he was arrested. When the bag was searched two cartridges and 11 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be a narcotic drug were found.

Gyamfi was handed over to the Police and in his caution statement he said the cartridges and dried leaves belong to him.

According to Gyamfi he was sent by his elder brother who is fetish priest at Adanse Dumpase, near Obuasi to buy the items for ritual purposes.
