Former Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has expressed concern over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that the decision could have serious implications for Ghana’s judiciary.

In an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Atta Akyea said the development could set a troubling precedent.

“I practice before the court, so, I am mindful of what I say. Whatever it is, there are consequences. You will get another who will say, ‘when I don’t like this Chief Justice, I will change the person’; and that is going to be a vicious cycle,” he said.

Gertrude Torkornoo was removed from office by President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, September 1, 2025.

The removal was announced in a statement issued by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

President Mahama acted following the submission of a report from the Article 146 Committee of Inquiry, which was set up to investigate petitions calling for Torkornoo’s removal.

The five-member committee was constituted after a prima facie case was determined in three separate petitions seeking her removal.

Justice Torkornoo, appointed Chief Justice in June 2023, is the second Chief Justice to be removed from office in the history of Ghana, with the first being Justice Sir Arku Korsah, who was sacked by Ghana’s first leader, President Kwame Nkrumah, in 1963.
