Too much pornography in Ghana escalating rape cases – Ampaw

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw Lawyer Maurice Ampaw

Ghanaian lawyer Maurice Ampaw has blamed the increasing incidents of rape and defilement to the proliferation of pornographic materials in the Ghanaian society.

He disclosed on the Morning Xpress on Radio XYZ Wednesday morning that those obscene materials had been common over the years yet authorities were not worried about it.

“There is sexual impunity and indecency going on in this country [and] it is a community factor. There is nudity all over, pornographic materials are all over the internet, social media, radio, television. We are exposed to sexual impunity,” he said when commenting on the arrest of some 3 teenagers in connection with a rape incident of an 18-year-old last Friday.

To him, it was the time the society frowned at those indecencies and parents held responsible for when their kids are exposed to such materials.

Asking for the Chief Justice to step in and seek justice for the victim, Mr Ampaw questioned the responsibilities of parents and teachers in stopping this menace.

To this end, he pushed for the identified parents of the culprits in the gang-rape issue to be punished for negligence if duty in the moral upbringing of their teenage boys.

“A child who is undisciplined will bring pain to their parents. I believe that we must even begin to hold the parents accountable or responsible on some of them their negligence. What kind of moral upbringing, what kind of disciplinary measures did they put in place to ensure that their children will be disciplined?” he quizzed.

Meanwhile, the Asokwa District Court in Kumasi will today, Wednesday, December 20, 2017 hear the matter in-camera.

XYZ News’ Jonathan Ofori has reported that some of the parents of the culprits have been identified and some of them were seen in court yesterday with their children.

The victim has started undergoing counselling, XYZ News has gathered.
