Pathologist and Former Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has urged people who abuse antibiotics to put a stop to it.

He said taking antibiotics indiscriminately destroys normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal system and with time, causes frequent stomach upsets.

He said instead of abusing antibiotics, people should eat more unsweetened or natural yogurt because it to helps repopulate normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal system.

Prof. Akosa made these comments on the #StayAlive segment of HSTV’s Morning Show,#HealthyMorning, talking to Cecil Lee Longdon about the functions of the Gastrointestinal tract, its importance and how it can be maintained healthily.

He said the primary function of the gastrointestinal tract is to receive food and make use of the food, but it is also a complex system which serves as the body’s source of energy.
