Tony Forson elected as new Ghana Bar Association President

Renowned legal practitioner Tony Forson has been elected new President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

Mr. Forson beat stiff competition from his colleagues Efua Ghartey and Charles Zwennes who garnered 315 and 215 votes respectively.

He takes over from Benson Nutsukpui whose tenure has come to an end.

The elections which took place on Thursday in Koforidua where the GBA is having its 2018/19 Annual General Conference also had William Oduro emerging as Vice President and Yaw Boafo as Secretary.

Others who retained their positions are Gyau Baffour; Assistant Secretary, Yaa Gyakobo; Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Saviour Kudze; Assistant PRO.

Meanwhile, the lawyers have called on the judicial council to take action against judges who administer bad judgments.

“We however wish to pray that the judicial council should take bold steps to strengthen the High court bench. The practice of assigning court of appeal judges as additional High court judges in most cases to handle perceived high profile cases entrenches the perception of a weak High court bench.

“…there’s the urgent need to sanction judges who deliver truly atrocious judgment not befitting of the high office of a High court judge. We as a bar will ensure that persons recommended by the association to the bench are of proven integrity and standard befitting the high office,” outgoing President Nutsukpui said in his address at the conference which was attended by President Akufo-Addo.
