Togbe Afede XIV condemns growing political vigilantism

President of the National House of Chiefs Togbe Afede XIV has condemned the increasing spate of vigilante groups in the country.

The situation, according to him, is a threat to the peace, unity, and development.

Addressing members of the National House of Chiefs at their general meeting, Togbe Afede XIV condemned all other actions that have a tendency of destabilizing the peace and unity of the nation.

“I want to caution against all actions that threaten our peace and unity.

“The insults are growing and are being escalated to presidential levels. Serial calling has now become a profession. More worrying are calls for the formation of vigilante groups.

“These do not augur well for our peace, unity and development,” he stressed.

Vigilante groups have launched brazen attacks on some key government establishments and persons including Members of Parliament.

Most of them are connected with political parties especially the two major ones of New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Regional reorganization

The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs also urged government to respect the roadmap enjoined in the 1992 Constitution for the creation of the new regions for the interest of the nation’s peace and unity.

“I believe the framers of the constitution have done a good job for giving us a clear roadmap for the creation of the new regions and alteration of boundaries. I advise that this roadmap is respected in the interest of peace and unity.”

Togbe Afede XIV noted that many people have made comments on the creation of the regions without having read the constitution.

For him, the constitution provides, among others, a referendum to approve the creation of a new region and alteration of boundaries of a region, whether or not the alteration involves the creation of the new region.

He, therefore, appealed to both those “who are for and those who are against the creation of new regions, politicians of the ruling party as well as those outside, and all Ghanaians, to uphold the truth for the sake of our country”.
