A family of five, including a toddler narrowly escaped death on Wednesday at Ave-Dakpa, when their mud house collapsed whiles they were sleeping, trapping them for about an hour.
Two of them, Prince Atsu Hodzi and Princess Atsufi Hodzi, twins aged 4, are on admission at the Saint Anthony’s Hospital at Dzodze with fractures.
Siblings, Dorcas Adjeiwa, 9, Godfred Hodzi, the toddler, and their mother, Doris Awunyo, 31, have been treated and discharged.
Madam Awunyo told the Ghana News Agency that the accident happened at about 2330 hours, shortly after a three-hour downpour.
She said it was only their portion of the three-room building that collapsed and that they had struggled under the debris for some time before help came.
Mr Benjamin Hodzi, Awunyo’s estranged husband and father of the children, who was a resident in another house, said he was informed about the accident by neighbours of his family, and rushed to join the rescue team.
Mr James Gunu, Akatsi-North District Chief Executive, accompanied by officials of the National Disaster Management Organization, visited the victims at the hospital and defrayed part of their bills.
Mr Gunu appealed to residents to inspect and repair dangerous cracks in their building and also fix the roofing, to forestall such accidents as the rains have started.
