World plumbing day 2014: plumbing, essential to human health

Today 11th March, 2014 as in every year is the World Plumbing Day, established for celebration by the United Nations (UN) and this year, we are looking at how essential plumbing is to human health.
Plumbing is a profession that no human can do without, but unfortunately; it is one of the professions that people and governments know less or nothing about and especially, its impact on humanity. For that matter, many people who have no idea are given the responsibilities that relate to the plumbing profession and the result of their ignorant actions turns to badly affect the lives of many who are equally ignorant.
The plumbing profession encompasses across our Potable Water Treatment/Supply Systems, Drainage and Sanitation Systems, Ventilation Systems, Flood Management Systems, Sewerage Treatment and recycling, Production and Supply of Bio-Gas, Oil and Gas Storage, Supply and Distribution, this to mention but few.
Due to ignorance, many others in the name of philanthropies and entrepreneurs or businessmen are taking the opportunity to use the improper means and methods to solve some aspects of the situation which ends up into increasing the plumbing challenges found around us, and that is how far ignorance in the plumbing profession has brought us. Typical examples are; the too many sachet water on the streets that increases traffic in our limited medical facilities, popularly known as pure water (but pure water is not good for drinking i.e. “potable”), the construction of drainage systems wrongly known as gutters which is the major cause of flooding during down pours, and the unpleasant method of disposing of sewerage which is also a great threat to human health, etc…
A day like this is to educate the general public on the safety measures that the plumbing profession can bring to humanity.
We are by this means calling everyone to take interest in knowing a little or more about the plumbing profession that will enhance our lives. We are also entreating opinion leaders in all capabilities to help promote the institutionalization of the plumbing profession as that of the Pharmaceutical Council of Ghana. (If you are not a member, you should not be given the opportunity to establish or manage any business that relates to the plumbing profession).
Essential as the plumbing profession is to human health, we wish to have it works so established as that of the health practitioners; with theirs for treatment and cure and plumbing for prevention.
It is our greatest wish to make our hard earned qualifications as plumbing professionals useful and accessible to enhance human health as we mark the World Plumbing Day, and look forward to answering any questions that you may be asking and also plan to celebrate it bigger in the coming years.
Wish all the plumbers around you A Happy Plumbing Day…
