Thunder struck husband and wife, Emmanuel Botwey, 27, and Rita Nketia, 26, to death at Assin Andoe Sibo Nkwanta in the Assin South District of the Central region – 134km by road from Accra.

According to an eyewitness, Yaw Mensah, the father of Rita and in-law of Emmanuel Botwey, the thunder and lightning killed the couple instantly on their farm.

“It started drizzling so we decided to set off,” he narrated.

“We had gone to seek refuge nearby and used leaves to cover our heads. Suddenly, there was a loud bang followed by lightning. The flash blurred my view briefly and when I was able to gain sight properly I saw my wife and the deceased couple lying on the floor.

“I shook my wife until she gained consciousness. But the couple didn’t respond so I had to rush to the village for help. We rushed them to the hospital and we were told the couple had lost their lives,” Mr. Mensah said.

The bodies have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.
