The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has initiated criminal investigations against several high-profile individuals, including three key appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to Agyebeng, at a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the investigations add to a growing list of high-profile corruption cases under review by his office, further emphasising the government's commitment to accountability and transparency in public office.
Kissi Agyebeng assured the public that his office is actively investigating these corruption cases to recover embezzled state resources.
1. Ken Ofori-Atta
The former Minister of Finance who served for over seven years during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government is a suspect in multiple criminal investigations, including cases of corruption and corruption-related activities connected to the construction of the National Cathedral of Ghana.
The cases under investigation include contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority, as well as the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC) for the Distribution, Loss Reduction, and Associated Network Improvement Project.
Other cases involve the procurement of contractors, materials, and payments related to the National Cathedral project, as well as activities and payments linked to a contract awarded by the Ministry of Health (initially initiated by the Ministry for Special Development Initiatives) to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the purchase, after-sales service, and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 305 CDI ambulances for the National Ambulance Service. Additionally, the investigation covers payments and utilization of funds from the Tax Refund Account of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
2. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid
The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), appointed in 2021 by the former president, is also under investigation by the OSP for alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF).
The investigation also targets three other individuals: Jacob Amoah, Coordinator of the UPPF; Wendy Ashong Newman, and Freda Tandoh.
3. Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng
The former Chief Executive Officer, Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, appointed in 2021, is also being investigated for alleged financial irregularities involving officials of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF).
According to the OSP, the probe is part of a broader effort to uncover potential mismanagement and misconduct within state institutions.
While details of the investigation remain undisclosed, the OSP stated that it is scrutinizing transactions and financial dealings within MIIF during Edward Koranteng’s tenure.
