Three people die in accident in Kumasi

Kumasi, Jan 29, GNA - Three people die on the spot, while several others sustained various degrees of injury when a wooden Benz cargo truck ran into several cars and later landed on a taxi cab at Afful Nkwanta on the Kumasi-Ejisu road Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were in the taxicab in the same direction with the truck, when it suddenly ran over several cars, which were in front of it and finally crashed the taxi into a nearby hotel entrance, trapping them in the process.

The injured, including the driver of the taxicab, were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where some of them were admitted and others treated and discharged.

It took several hours by a combined team of the police, fire personnel and some sympathizers in the area to remove the truck, which had been loaded with maize, beans, groundnuts and millet, before they could attend to the victims in the taxicab.

DSP James Apri, Zongo District Police Commander, who confirmed the accident to the Ghana News Agency, said the driver of the truck, which was descending the Aful Nkwanta hill from Kumasi, might have had a break failure and suddenly crushed into several vehicles ahead of him and finally landed on the taxicab.

The accident brought about a heavy traffic jam on the road, which is the only road from the main city centre to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and other towns leading to Ejisu and Konongo. 29 Jan 06
