Three miners die as pit caves in

Akwatia (E/R), April 27, GNA - Three persons digging for diamonds died and four others injured when the pit in which they were working caved in, burying them at the Gyampenssa mining area, near Akwatia. Two of them, Kwame Addo, 30 and Kofi Akwa, 36, died instantly, while Kwabena Agyemang, died later at the St Donimic's Hospital at Akwatia.

The four injured were identified as George Okyere, Justice Opoku, Kwasi Francis and Hayford Anyan, who were treated and discharged at the hospital.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Desmond Owusu Boampong, told the Ghana News Agency that the seven persons were legally working in a pit on a concession when the accident happened. In another development, Owuraku Agbezey, 40, who was said to be suffering from epilepsy, got drowned in the Mmow river at Akwatia on Monday, when he went to the bush in search for mushrooms. When his cutlass and clothes were found on the banks of the river, a search party was organized which found the body floating a few metres away.

The Police said Agbezey might have gone to swim when he got drowned. The body had since been buried after autopsy at the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Hospital at Akwatia. 27 April, 06
