Three Amenfi districts vow not to join Western South Region

Disgruntled opinion Leaders, Chiefs and the people of the Amenfi East, Amenfi West and Amenfi Central have petitioned the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo of their unwillingness to be part of the Western South Region when the entire western region is finally divided into two separate regions.

According to them, their paramount chief; Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II signed the joint petition sent to the office of the president some few months ago because they believe the Amenfis should be part of the Western North Region and not the Western South Region as sighted documents read.

Registering their displeasure on Tuesday morning on the streets of Asankragwa in a peaceful demonstration, the youth argued that “traditionally, socially, politically, economically, historically, and culturally the Sefwis, Aowins and the Amenfis have a lot in common through inter-marriages, schooling and good neighborliness”, therefore the Amenfi Districts must be part of the Western North Region.

However, proximity to the new regional capital wherever it would be cited would be less than half the travelling time from any part of Amenfi as compared to journeying to the current regional capital, Sekondi-Takoradi.

The people maintain that the new region obviously comes with opportunities for development which the Amenfi Districts would be in a better position to benefit immensely.

Copies of their petition were sent to the office of the Minister for Regional Integration, the Western Regional Minister and the Omanhene of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Council – Wassa Akropon.
