Threatening and intimidating people over referendum unfortunate - Lecturer

Political science lecturer, Mohammed Abass, has underscored the need for democracy to be enforced as we prepare towards the creation of the six new regions.

The lecturer who lectures at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) said it would be important for a free, transparent, credible and a clean process.

In his view, nobody should be forced or threatened to either vote for or against the creation of the regions.

“We should have a fair process. There should be no intimidation. If after the process majority vote for yes for the new regions, we should accept it and if it goes in the opposite way, we should also accept it in good faith. We can only have unity if a fair process is achieved and people are allowed to vote according to their will.

He described as unfortunate attempts by some chiefs to threaten and intimidate their subjects ahead of the referendum.

He has therefore called on them to desist from the act of intimidation and threats.

The referendum for the six new regions is slated for December 27, 2018 in the affected regions and only residents in these regions are expected to vote.

Some individuals have kicked against the creation of the regions including a Ghanaian lawyer based in the United States who is popularly referred to as Kweku Azar.
