The OneGhana Movement has described the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, as a painful national loss.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the group described the two deceased ministers as exemplary public servants who embodied the values of patriotism and accountability.
“We honour the memory and legacy of the departed ministers and the other passengers on the helicopter. Their loss is felt deeply not just within their immediate circles but across the entire country,” the statement read.
The OneGhana Movement noted that the two ministers supported the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey.
"Both were committed supporters in our fight against Galamsey through the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey. Their cooperation with the OneGhana Movement and service to Ghana made them One Ghanaian in many ways," it said.
The Movement further underscored the importance of drawing strength from the example the deceased leaders set.
“We are devastated by this tragic occurrence but hopeful that their service to country shall be a continuous inspiration to many, and their fight against Galamsey which led to the loss of their lives shall not be in vain.”
As part of measures to protect public servants and their families, the group called on government to institute a government-funded group life insurance policy for the dependents of all public officials who serve the nation.
"The Movement urges the government to support the bereaved families and hereby calls for the institution of a government-funded group life insurance policy to cover the dependents of the deceased. We must protect the families of those who elect to serve our country," it stated.
It also called for investigations into the cause of the disaster.
"We further call for a thorough, transparent investigation into the cause of the disaster. We also advocate for an urgent review of aviation safety protocols to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future."
The helicopter disaster, which occurred at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region, has plunged the nation into mourning and drawn tributes from across the political divide.
