The Royal Bank (TRB) Foundation on Tuesday commissioned five boreholes in some communities in the Ga South and West Municipal Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region.
The communities are Oduntia, Akramaman, Obeyeyie, Trekukope and Horkupe.
Mr Faustell Kwashie Asogba Cofie, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, TRB Foundation, said these communities were selected on the basis of a demonstrable need for potable drinking water.
He said these were the first five of the fifty communities around the country, who would benefit from the foundation’s water project.
He said five communities in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region would be the next to benefit from the project.
“We will then move to the central, Volta and other regions in that order,” he added.
Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, TRB, said during the launch of the foundation, it was tasked to construct fifty boreholes to provide potable water to needy communities, within a year.
He said the foundation would construct sixty boreholes annually for needy communities across the country.
The Chairman said the Managing Director had instructed them to assess the Amasaman area for possible opening of a new branch.
Mr Samuel Attuquaye Quaye, The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga-West Municipal Assembly, commended the management of the Bank for coming to the aid of the communities.
He said the greatest challenge in the municipality was access to potable water, so the provision of these facilities has come as a sign of relief.
He said the Assembly would like to partner the Bank to enhance the development of education, adding that, schools in the area are still using blackboards instead of whiteboards.
He called on traditional leaders in the beneficiary communities to ensure that the boreholes were maintained to meet the needs of residents of the area.
Mr Francis Opoku, a resident, told the Ghana News Agency that the water the community previously depended on for drinking before the construction of the borehole was “bad”.
The main objective of the foundation was to give back to society, while focusing on health, sanitation and water, support for education and support for culture and sport.
