The Young Democrat, a Pro-NDC youth group has commended the President for the wise and meaningful choices he has made in nominating his initial batch of Ministers.
They said it is within his remit because article 78 in the 1992 constitution gives him the power to appoint capable people to assist him in managing the affairs of the state and so far he has taken very credible steps with the appointment of women, technocrats and even neutral but capable non politicians in his cabinet.
In an interview with the GNA, Mohammed Rashas, the spokesperson for the group said the effort of the President is to broaden the scope of his government and that there is the need to give him space as he seeks to continue and invigorate the ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ policy.
He said it is normal for people to lobby in any new administration but the extent to which some youth groups are seeking to issue ultimatums by their actions or inactions is unfortunate and would not augur well in the united body.
Mr Rashas said there is the need to channel all grievances to the appropriate quarters and it should be done decently with some decorum adding that the President by his action is abiding by the “partnership rather than the partisanship” approach, and this also means he is listening to the call from many quarters on the need for an “all-inclusive” government.
Abigail Mensah, the Secretary of the group, said by his current appointments, the President has shown that he is not only serious with the work at hand, but has the grasp of the government business and would work hard to improve the lives of all Ghanaians.
She said though the actions of the agitating youth groups are understandable, there are equally competent people in the Party and the President would have to determine those he would work with for a period and besides the appointments are not over and reshuffles would also be done at a certain stage, hence there is the need for patience on all sides.
Ms Mensah said “as a woman, I am happy the President has nominated more women to join his cabinet and with qualified women like Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, Minister of State at the Presidency; Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Minister for Justice and Attorney-General; Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Ministry of Transport; Hannah Tetteh, Foreign Affairs Ministry; and Prof Nana Jane Opoku Agyemang at the Education Ministry; we shall see more useful policies being developed and introduced to improve the entire spectrum.
She said a capable and competent nominee like Nana Oye Lithur, who is known for her human rights and gender advocacy, with her nomination to the appropriate sector, we shall see more being done to protect the vulnerable in the society, and many young women or the “girl-child’ would now have another model to emulate.
Ms. Mensah urged the President to continue with his efforts in consulting all concerned as he continues building a formidable team to govern the affairs of the country.
