The Chronicle: This prophetic nonsense must stop

Thirty-first watch night services in Ghana over the years have never been without pastors giving out wild prophesies about the New Year.

In what has become a culture by the men of God during this august occasion, many self-acclaimed prophets who have gained prominence over the years mount their podiums to give out startling revelations about things bound to happen in the coming year to Ghanaians who throng their auditoriums.

As expected, Ghanaians were not disappointed this year as some of these prophets outline some prophesies which they claimed have been revealed to them by God.

In one of the prophecies, it was revealed that president Akufo-Addo will be retained for the second time in this years’ elections in a one-touch victory. “NPP and Nana Akufo-Addo are winning this 2020 elections; the almighty God has not taken the leadership mantle from them, so the NPP will definitely win the election, and also there will be no run-off in the 2020 election; the NPP is winning one-touch, and it will be very difficult if anything changes from what God has told me”, the man of God said.

Another prophet also indicated that although the New Patriotic Party have been confirmed in the heavens, there was the need to work very hard. He said the party has to put in more effort to enable them retain the seat.

However, another prophet gave a twisted version of the party’s win in 2020. He stated emphatically that the incumbent NPP would win the 2020 elections, but their happiness will be short-lived because of the death of Akufo-Addo.

“President Akufo-Addo, go and rest because of health. Otherwise, in 2020, one day, the same way I prophesied about President Mills, Ghana will wake up and there will be nobody seated on the seat as president; the person will be no more. It happened in NDC time; President Mills was not healthy but they were pushing him…”, he noted.

However, another prophesy that made its way into the media indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by its flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama, would win the 2020 elections with ease.

Giving more details on the prophecy, the prophet revealed that former president Mahama would poll 52.1% of the total votes cast, come December 7. He continued that the Lord revealed to him that the Central and Western Regions and Asamankese would vote massively for the NDC in the elections.

After 31st, many Ghanaians have criticized these men of God and called on them to put a stop to it before the untoward happens.

General Secretary of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), has said the rising tide of prophesies about the yet to be held elections could plunge the country into chaos.

According to him, as much as Ghanaians are at liberty to exercise their right to faith, , this should not grant religious fanatics the license to inflame expectations.

We at The Chronicle support the call made by the CPP General Secretary, and call on the so-called prophets to put a stop to these incessant prophesies before sending the country into chaos.

It would be recalled that the time a prophet gave one such prophesy about the National Chief Iman, it wasn’t taken lightly by our Muslim brothers, leading to an attack on the church.

The Chronicle would want to find out if these pastors have stopped to think of what will happen if some people also decide to toe the line of our Muslim brothers? We are aware that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana grants individuals and groups the right to free association, but this should not be abused.

This paper calls on the Christian Council to take up the issue and ensure that the canker is nipped in the bud.
