Ghana Federation for Traditional Herbal Medicine Practitioners Association (GHAFTRAM) says it welcomes decision by the government to examine Madagascar’s COVID-19 herbal in managing ailments of COVID 19 patients.

The federation says the move would encourage Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to fast track processes in approving proposed local herbal medicines for COVID-19.

Additionally, they believe it would re-kindle the trust for local herbal medicines instead of acclaimed orthodox medicines.

General Secretary for GHAFTRAM Nana Kwadwo Obiri speaking to Nana Yaw Opare on “Yensempa” morning show on Onua FM maintained it is an opportunity for some 25 local medicines submitted to the Ministry of Health for the treatment of COVID-19 to receive equal attention.

Nana Obiri revealed they have presented two sets of medicines including herbal medicines which are yet to be tested and approved for use by FDA.

The second set of drugs he said were immune booster already approved by the FDA but have to run further tests to see if it could by use to treat the virus.

“We welcome this news, at least it’s coming from Africa which means that we are beginning to believe in what we have as a people and would help us to push harder for approval of our proposed local medicines to treat the novel corona virus”.

He revealed that 18 local medicines have already been approved by Mampong Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine for treatment of COVID-19 symptoms to FDA and would keenly monitor FDA whether it would approve the local medicines alongside the Madagascar’s COVID-Organics.
