Alex Segbefia, former Minister of Health Alex Segbefia, former Minister of Health

A former Minister of Health, Alex Segbefia, has contradicted claims by the board chairman of the Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem I, that he was officially notified about the financial scandal in the school prior to leaving government in 2016.

The board chairman, who is also the chief of Tepa on Tuesday, told Kumasi-based Ultimate Fm that when the issue was first raised, he drew the attention of the minister in a letter he officially sent to the Health Ministry and is still awaiting the response.

“It’s an allegation that has been made against the Principal and the Accountant. What I know is that every allegation must be followed by investigations. This thing has come to me before and I wrote officially to the then Minister of Health Alex Segbefia in 2016. So we were just waiting for the ministry’s response, they have not replied to me yet”, he revealed

But responding to the issue on Starr Fm on Wednesday, Mr Alex Segbefia categorically denied knowledge of the said scandal or a letter to that effect as claimed by the chief who indicated that the rot began in 2011 two years after the establishment of the health institution.

According to the former Health Minister, he does not remember receiving any such letter from the Tepa Chief adding “ it is not to say the letter was not brought in. Maybe it was but I do not remember. “I’m not aware of the fraud and I’m not the one to sit on issues if I have the facts to act upon. You have to understand that in my position we get a lot of mischievous letters implicating people in high positions, directors…so every complain that comes you must go through processes and procedures before you can act upon it.”
