Tension mounts in Wulensi as 99 suspended NDC members cry foul over ‘political prosecution’

Tensions are mounting within the Wulensi branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region, as a group of suspended members has launched a protest against what they describe as an unconstitutional and unjust action by local party executives, according to a citinewsroom.com report.

At a press conference held in Kanjo on Sunday, June 15, 2025, the group calling itself the Concerned Suspended Loyal Members demanded the immediate reversal of the suspension of 96 members and issued a call for a public apology.

“The illegal suspension violates Article 48 Clause 123 of our party constitution, which mandates fair hearing, due process, and proper communication,” said Seth Augustus Tangnun, secretary to the group.

“This is not party discipline it is political prosecution.”

According to the group, the suspensions stem from their strategic support for an independent candidate during the 2024 parliamentary elections.

They argued that the decision was not disloyalty but rather a calculated move to address the disconnect between the then-NDC parliamentary candidate and the party’s grassroots base.

They further explained that the elected independent MP now caucuses with the NDC in Parliament, making their decision beneficial to the party rather than harmful.

The 2024 elections in Wulensi exposed deep-seated divisions within the local NDC structure, despite reconciliation efforts by then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama.

Following the polls, local executives took disciplinary action against members who had backed the independent candidate.

The issue has resurfaced after constituency executives held their own press conference last week to protest the appointment of a new NADMO District Coordinator.

They alleged the appointee was not a true NDC member and had been handpicked by the independent MP.

However, the suspended group pushed back on those claims, defending the coordinator as a loyal member of the party and asserting that the local executives’ actions are threatening party cohesion ahead of future elections.

“We remain committed to the ideals and goals of the NDC, but we cannot stand by while unconstitutional decisions divide us,” Tangnun added.

The group has called on the national leadership of the NDC to intervene to restore unity and ensure that disciplinary processes are grounded in fairness and party rules.
