Tension is very high in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa, after some Police officers allegedly attacked an Army Officer in the area.

According to a local reporter Maurice Banamwini, the Military officer named Captain Mante was manhandled by the police officers after he made an illegal U-turn. The issue has heightened tension between Military and Police personnel in the region with residents fearing reprisal attacks between the two groups.

“Operation Vanguard which is in the Upper West Region has been in Nadowli-Kaleo district and also some part of the Wa East District and Capt. Mante was brutalized when he was alleged to have made a wrong U-turn in the municipality. A Police patrol team accosted him and ask him to go with them to the Police station but he’s said to have pulled out a pistol and started firing and that angered and triggered confusion between the Police personnel and Capt. Mante. The ensuing confusion resulted in a fight during which the Police allegedly assaulted him and threw him into their Pick up vehicle.

“As we speak there’s heavy security presence in the area because there’s something that could trigger the soldiers to also retaliate regarding what they did to one of their own.”

A four member committee has been set up to investigate the matter.
