Tema local authorities undergo training

Tema, March 17, GNA - The Tema Municipal Assembly has organised a day's orientation course for its Zonal Councillors and Unit Committee members to sensitise them on the new local Government system. It was also to educate them on how to play their roles effectively to complement and promote the development agenda of the TMA.

In a speech read for him, the acting Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Evans Ashong Narh, reminded participants of the priorities of the Assembly, which he said, included improving sanitation and facilitating payment of refuse collection fees, revenue mobilisation and undertaking public campaigns to enlighten the public on Government policies and programmes.

He said although the Assembly had invested heavily in environmental sanitation, the refusal of some residents to pay refuse and sewer fees have been a drawback on its ability to raise environmental cleanliness in the Municipality.

He, therefore, advised the participants to educate the people on the need to pay their fees and rates levied by the Assembly and help to collect such taxes.

The Acting MCE mentioned the erecting of unauthorised structures in the township as one area that participants should pay attention to and asked them to report all suspicious developments to the Engineer's Department of the Assembly for appropriate action. Meanwhile, the TMA has warned hawkers and traders, as well as those who own unauthorised structures in Ashaiman to relocate or face forcible ejection.
