Tema Workers Disappointed With TUC Leadership

Tema The Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) today expressed its disappointment at the inability of the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to live up to the expectations of members. At an emergency meeting at Tema today, representatives of the workers expressed their disgust about how the TUC has been allowing a series of policy decisions to stand when they are glaringly not in favour of workers. Among these are the "unfavourable" pension schemes, consolidation of salaries leading to the withdrawal of various allowances and the acceptance of 2,000 cedis as the daily minimum wage. The meeting rejected the 2,000 cedis minimum wage and called on the TUC leadership to always consult its rank and file when it is pushed to the wall during future negotiations. Members of the TDCL were of the opinion that the purchasing power of Ghanaian workers has been eroded by inflationary trends due to high interest rates and the falling value of the cedi against major foreign currencies. A number of market forces must be taken into consideration in arriving at minimum wages, they said.
