Teachers in turf war with GES over unilateral insurance premium deductions

Teachers in the country are currently at warpaths with the Ghana Education Service (GES) over the unilateral deduction of insurance premiums from their June salaries.

MyNewsGh.com observed from pay slips of some teachers that GH¢10 was deducted from the salaries of the teachers meant for an insurance package termed as GES-SIC.

Most teacher union leaders MyNewsGh.com spoke to denied knowledge of the commencement of the deduction indicating that it was done on their blind side.

According to what we gathered, the Ghana Education Service signed the compulsory insurance cover with SIC life for all teachers in the country which mandates teachers to pay GH¢10 to be deducted at source starting June 2018.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) disclosed that they were not duly consulted before the implementation of the mandatory insurance deductions.

They have vowed to petition the government and other stakeholders and follow up with an emergency meeting before the close of the week to discuss the matter which has left most teachers seething in anger.

GES-SIC LIFE GROUP LIFE INSURANCE PROGRAMME

We publish the following notice (unaudited) from the Corporate Services Department for the attention of all Members of Staff.

“The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Teacher Unions, as part of its commitment to promoting the welfare of its members has instituted a Group Life Insurance Package for both teaching and non-teaching staff of GES. The underwriter is SIC Life Company Limited.

The aim of this programme is to ensure that every teaching and non-teaching staff of GES has a minimum level of insurance cover. Members are at liberty to take additional insurance as they may please.

This will complement the existing funeral grant which is very limited.

Government is subsidizing the cost of the insurance, so members to the scheme will contribute GH?10.00 per month to ensure the continued sustenance of this all-important insurance plan.

Members’ contributions will be deducted directly at source through the Controller & Accountant General’s Department.

First deduction of premium will be done at the end of June 2018, and cover starts on 1st July 2018.

Any member of GES who does not want to be covered under this Group Life Insurance should write to the GES through their union to ensure that the Government does not pay any premium on their behalf.

BENEFITS UNDER THE GES-SIC LIFE GROUP LIFE INSURANCE PACKAGE

Life cover of GH?18,000.00 for natural and accidental deaths.

Permanent Disability cover of up to GH?18,000 for permanent disability arising out of an accident or a serious illness.

Critical illness cover of GH?9,000 paid upon the diagnosis of a critical illness such as Cancer, Stokes, Kidney Failure, Heart Attacks, Paralysis and Deafness.

This plan pays out a lump sum amount to take care of future financial needs, so that the dreams of members and their dependents are not cut short by death, illness or accident.

Claims will be paid within seven (7) working days after the necessary claims documents have been received.

CLAIMS PROCESS FOR GES-SIC LIFE GROUP LIFE INSURANCE PACKAGE

Documents Required:

Written letter of notification from Unions or GES.

Completion of death or injury claim form.

Proof of death

Medical report in case of disability or critical illness

Claims will be paid within seven (7) working days after the necessary claims documents have been received.
