Teacher remanded for defilement of 13-year-old pupil

Accra, June 20, GNA - A 30-year-old teacher was on Monday remanded into police custody for allegedly defiling one of his pupils, aged 13.

Emmanuel Otoo, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement, is to reappear before the court presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa on June 27.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah told the court that the accused person is a class teacher of the pupil of a school in Accra (name withheld).

On June 11 this year at 0830 hours, the victim left for classes and returned very late to the house.

The prosecution said on her return, her mother saw that her daughter's jeans trousers zip was torn. When she questioned her daughter, she disclosed that the accused person forcibly had sex with her and tore her zip in the process.

ASP Acquah said the victim's mother informed her husband about the case and he lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.

The prosecutor said after the victim was issued with a medical form to go to the hospital for examination and treatment, she led the Police to arrest Otoo.

ASP Acquah said Otoo admitted the offence during interrogation.
