Tamale floods kill 2

Many parts of the Northern regional capital, Tamale, were devastated by floods following a six-hour downpour yesterday.

According to our affiliate radio station, Suhupelli FM at Tamale, two people died as a result of the rains which started at dawn.

They were identified as a Class 2 pupil from SDA School in the metropolis and a woman who got drown at a place called Rice City.

The situation, our sister station reported, made it very difficult for some motorists to continue their journeys due to the pressure of the flood waters on highways.

Premises of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) and the Central Hospital were also not spared by the floods as the two state health facilities had their properties worth millions of Ghana cedis destroyed.

The situation also left health workers and patients stranded as the floods made treatment of the patients a daunting task.

The nurses and other health workers had to spend hours mopping the floors and cleaning the environment to restore normalcy at the hospitals.

Residents in areas including Rice City, our reporter said, were also left frustrated as they spent several hours salvaging their properties and scooping out rainwater that had flooded their houses.

Some residents told Suhupelli News that they had no option than to leave the area and search for safe grounds.

The aftermath of the downpour left pools of water on some major roads including the Tamale Teaching Hospital area, as well as the Central Hospital.

Filth also engulfed some parts of the capital after the downpour.
