Tamale Municpal Assembly Exonorated

Tamale, Sept 3, The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has exonerated the Tamale Municipal Assembly (TAMA) from queries raised in the Auditor General's Report. The report queried the TAMA for not deducting 7.4 million cedis tax from funds paid to its contractors. Mr David Nyankamuwu, Tamale Municipal Coordinating Director, told the Ghana News Agency in Tamale today that the Public Accounts Committee summoned the TAMA because of communication gap between the offices of the Northern Region Audit Service and that of the Auditor General. He said the assembly had responded to Parliament's query by providing original receipts from the Internal Revenue Service, adding that the Regional Audit Service failed to forward them to the Auditor General. Mr Nyankamuwu said the assembly collected 12.9 million cedis as tax from 34 contractors as against 7.4 million cedis queried in the report. He denied that TAMA paid contractors without taking receipts from them as earlier published and that the 418 million cedis which was paid to contractors without receipts was not rpt not an offence committed by TAMA. About 70 district assemblies have been summoned by the Public Accounts Committee to answer queries raised in the Auditor General's report.
