Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has urged the Mahama-led administration to urgently address the ongoing power crisis rather than focusing on dismissing chief executive officers of government institutions.
In his national address on May 7, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama provided an account of his first 120 days in office, reaffirming his commitment to fulfilling the promises made under his 120-day social contract with Ghanaians.
He emphasised his administration’s dedication to implementing tangible reforms with urgency and integrity, outlining a series of bold actions aimed at “resetting” Ghana and fostering a more just, inclusive, and accountable society.
However, responding to the address, Afenyo-Markin, speaking on behalf of the New Patriotic Party at a press conference on May 8, 2025, called on Mahama to prioritise resolving the power crisis—a pledge he made to Ghanaians—rather than dismissing chief executives.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the persistent power outages are crippling businesses. He, thus, urged the government to focus on fixing the crisis rather than targeting individuals for removal from office.
“The emerging power crisis during the second term of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama is deepening, and it appears it will be darker and deadlier across the country. Businesses are gradually grinding to a halt, industries are scaling back production, and hospitals are struggling to save lives without consistent electricity.
“Yet they go to the hospitals and all they know is sacking the chief executives, that is all that the ministers are doing, targeting chief executives and sacking them instead of putting on the light. Home appliances are burning out, livelihoods are vanishing, and the national mood is collapsing under the weight of government inaction,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the ongoing power outages are escalating into a national emergency that requires immediate attention.
He urged the government to prioritise finding solutions rather than continuously making excuses.
He said, “What we are seeing today is not intermittent disruption, it is a national emergency. Yet, the Mahama administration continues to offer excuses rather than solutions, resorting to repeated blame instead of a decisive action. Ghanaians deserve light, not lectures. Leadership is action, not endless lamentation and the blame game”.
“Mr President, NDC government, bring back our lights. You were not elected to lament, you were elected to do the work and fix the lights, and fix the problem. You promised in your State of the Nation Address that you were going to fix these problems. You are not fixing them. Fix the problem,” Afenyo-Markin added.
